Poverty, hidden from our views

War, natural disasters and maybe a dip in global finance etc, they all strike fear and panic deep down to the core of our hearts alike. While we are meddling with all these, we are unaware how poverty and hunger, the master of all silent killers, rounds up a whooping amount of almost 21,000 child deaths everyday around the world.

Based on http://www.globalissues.org, here are some mind-blowing numbers that really keeps mii wondering how blind we are to not notice such an important global issue:
Some 22,000 children die every day around the world.

That is equivalent to:
  • 1 child dying every 4 seconds
  • 14 children dying every minute
  • A 2011 Libya conflict-scale death toll every day
  • A 2010 Haiti earthquake occurring every 10 days
  • A 2004 Asian Tsunami occurring every 11 days
  • An Iraq-scale death toll every 19–46 days
  • Just under 7.6 million children dying every year
  • Some 92 million children dying between 2000 and 2010

And there you have it, facts that none of us even bother to keep a simple notice on just because we all think our lives are complicated enough. While we are complaining about the injustice of how the society treats us, blaming the heavens for not giving us a better life, we tend to forget how lucky we are to be able to even breathe another day. Devastating as it seems, poverty has certainly reached its climax, or maybe even more if it weren't for those organizations and fund-raisers aiming to reduce world poverty rates.

''The continuation of this suffering and loss of life contravenes the natural human instinct to help in times of disaster. Imagine the horror of the world if a major earthquake was to occur and people stood by and watched without assisting the survivors! Yet every day, the equivalent of a major earthquake killing over 30,000 young children occurs to a disturbingly muted response. They die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.'' UNICEF, Progress of Nations 2000

As then, many efforts have been carried out to save these kids, but unfortunately, it seems that the world still does not notice. It might be reasonable to expect that death and tragedy on this scale should be prime time headlines news. Yet, these issues only surface when there are global meetings or concerts (such as the various G8 summits, the Make Poverty History campaign in 2005, etc).

So, what went wrong? Is it our ignorance that has blinded us from the real view on the world? Or has our self-centered and egoistic minds taken over our sense of sympathy and rationalism? We always tend to think that we have problems that no one could solve, or we are too indulged into our daily routine that we have not even the time to lend a simple helping hand to those in need. I dare not say it for myself, hence same goes to everyone else. Sometimes, it is better for us to stop and think, how you’d feel if you were in those children’s shoes? Would you still be complaining on getting to much homework, or would you still be mad at getting a low pay cheque? For those kids, all they wanted was food for them to yet survive another day.

Based on some read-up facts, the world has indeed enough food to feed everyone in this world, but homo-sapiens, these undeveloped species waste food every day! We as the most intellect creatures in this world still have much to learn. Just only in Malaysia, stats show that every day, we wasted an amount of food that could feed 1000 children for a month! And how depressing this is to know that the world is wasting what could be ‘gold’ to this starving kids.

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.’’ This could be the reason why problems like these stay hidden from the lenses of the community.

Also stated on Global Issues, poverty is the state for the majority of the world’s people and nations. Why is this? Is it enough to blame poor people for their own predicament? Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight? What about their governments? Have they pursued policies that actually harm successful development? Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more global causes of poverty are often less discussed.

Behind the increasing interconnectedness promised by globalization are global decisions, policies, and practices. These are typically influenced, driven, or formulated by the rich and powerful. These can be leaders of rich countries or other global actors such as multinational corporations, institutions, and influential people. In the face of such enormous external influence, the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggle. –more articles could be found on: http://www.globalissues.org

Together, I believe we could make a difference. All it takes is a little time of your daily life to care and find ways to help these children. Saying is one thing but doing is another. They are humans, just like mii and you, its just that we live a much better life than theirs and it is our duty to try to help them. Let us too put our hands together and pray for their well-being, may they be well and happy always...

Describe: L.O.V.E.

If LOVE could be like the setting sun,

Giving me warm and comfort whenever i need it most...

If LOVE could be like the big blue sky,

Giving me the freedom to love you more...

If LOVE could be like the bright, round moon,

Showing that we were meant to be...

I would LOVE you with my might,

Till the very last breath of my life...

There Used To Be

There used to be,
An old oak tree,
Where there was then,
The world found You and Me.

There used to be,
A river so crystal clear,
Oh how i remembered it,
Past those meaningful years.

There used to be,
A grasp of sunlight,
Brightening up our days,
Banishing all sorrows aside.

There was to be,
A future in sight,
However destiny turns,
Leaving me so empty inside.

Gone does the oak tree,
Gone does the river,
Gone does the sunlight,
Along with the future.

As sorrow crept in,
Leaving me so helpless,
My hopes destroyed,
Now life is just pointless...

Meteorite

Silence creeps through a starry night,
The moon glows with its light so bright;
With rays of sliver glimmer, speckle and dust,
Shining through the forest paths giving it Life!

Nestled bugs dance around rustled leaves,
Crickets sing about to the melody;
Owls go hoot into the pitch black night,
The night is young with no day in sight.

Then behold!

Zooming through the black dark skies,
A silver lining so clear in sight;
Piercing through cotton clouds with all its might,
Creating awe, pleasure and of course, delight.

It was not alone,
Nor abandoned,
Nor stranded,
Certainly not the only one left.

Like a herd of cows grazing away,
Like pack of wolves out hunting for prey;
Like a school of fish swimming in circles,
It brought company to this place of miracles.

The night then lilted with lights of pride,
Blending colours into everything in sight;
Make a wish now with all your might,
On this very day flooded with meteorites…

A Dark Black Night

Once upon a dark black night,
The silver moon shining ever so bright,
Litted up with glittering speckled city lights,
Creating much of a glamorous sight.

Crickets play while owls take flight,
The night wind blows with all its might,
Tree leaves rustle while branches creek,
The clouds and the moon played hide and seek.

Silence crept through the city streets,
Another day passes while the world sleeps,
Dawn soon approaches with light in sight,
It all happens once upon a dark black night.........

The RM1 Story

It was a long time ago, way back then when i was only a mere kid, 7 years old to be exact when i was then enrolled in Pei Hwa primary school, soon finding myself ending up in 1M class. At that time, there was nothing much for me but merely RM1 per day to school due to my family's poor financial circumstances during those years back then.

So, it was a plate of 40cent fried mee for me everyday as my breakfast, which to me was more than appealing compared to only dry bread everyday. The remaining money was kept safely in my piggy bank, hoping one day I will have my own financial base in future (its still on top of my cupboard, and it is always getting full!).

Hence, remembering vividly on what happened that day was, like any usual day, i was on my way to the school canteen. On approaching, a luxurious smell soon whipped me from my head to toes, my fav! Loh mai gai (glutinous chicken rice). Like no any other, it was one of the delicacies that i used to enjoy hell since when. It really challenged my taste buds to get hold of one and my tummy seems to be appealing to the idea. Then the heartbreaker, standing between me and my breakfast was a signboard stating--- RM2 per piece. It was like the earth started shattering beneath me. Gasping at my single note, i soon found myself standing at one corner, staring at those who could afford it. I was a cry-baby then, and tears did fill up every corner of my eye-sockets. It was devastating.

Then out of nowhere, i was soon staring at another RM1 note right in front of my face. It was him, which at that time was no different from me in terms of stature and size. He which i soon found out, was my classmate, though i didn't really know him as he was the quiet type in class. Joy, happiness, delight, you describe it, it was all written on my face, and it was too, being projected on his face as well. It was no later then that we found ourselves sitting next to each other, enjoying a meal two new friends could ever have.

Due to that incident, i soon got to know him, his character, his personality, everything. It was like we were destined to meet and there was nothing that could part us. But i spoke too soon as a month later, he broke to me that he and his family will be shifting to the US. At the time, i was naive, thinking that he would soon return and we would see each other again. However, when he left, he left without breathing a word, and as for me, i was still looking forward to returning the RM1 to him.

Time passes by so quickly, and soon, about 12 years passed by in a flash. My memory was wiped clean of his existance and i couldn't even remember his name clearly. And as i was walking through the pasar malam held in conjungtion for Keat Hwa's 100th anniversary celebration, i was soon called upon by an unknown figure. He was a stranger to me at first, but when he took out a piece of RM1, my jaw dropped shocked, Him!

I was touched much at that time, i stared at him and he stared right back. Am i really looking at him? Alas, all doubt was set aside and we soon found ourselves enjoying coffee and catching up old times. It was great to know, he still remembered me after all those years. Then, as if history repeated itself 12 years ago, i soon found myself pushing a RM1 note into his hands. How he refused and rejected, but alas, he accepted as well. It was destiny, and i really am gratefull to that because, as what he done 12 years ago, he soon left for the US a day after we met.

Today, my mum cooked loh mai gai for my family, and looking at the big pot of loh mai gai certainly did get my eyes all watery. That RM1 note though, be it a mere RM1 note, be it meaningless to others, be it meaningless to return to him now, but it certainly has made my day 12 years ago, filling up my hungry tummy, and also, bringing two different personalities together as a whole. To me, it is as meaningful as it can get, and i really thank him for his kind deed 12 years back....
