A Memory-full Of Crackers!

It was a cold, rainy day like no other. Peeking out from the window, the thought of stepping out for a meal seemed so unappetizing. The whistle of the kettle was heard from afar, its steam gushing out from all its sides; boiled water was ready. A hot cup of black coffee made with a tin of Jacob's Cream Crackers in hand. A cracker split into half, with little crumbs all over; a dunk into the rich aroma of dark black liquid, combined into something my taste buds would never forget.

It's been that way ever since I was five! And till today, that great taste IS still the same. The packages might have changed throughout those years, but that crunchy awesomeness had amazingly been well-preserved. To dip and dunk these crackers into my favourite coffee, and to savour that perfect taste was all I could ever ask for.

People say that these crackers were good for breakfast, but I actually had them for all my meals at times! I remember a time back then, when I first held onto these crackers, I really loved the unforgettable butter (cream) smell on them. And there was once when I tried dipping a cracker into my coffee, I dipped it in too long and it just broke off; the broken piece floating in my cup, seemingly teasing me. I got a spoon and fished it out, and instead of throwing it away, I gobbled it all down. The rich coffee, oozing out from all sides of the cracker, wonderful!

From then onwards, I developed a skill, a skill that would allow me to dip in for a longest time possible to allow as much coffee to be absorbed and not let the cracker break off. And guess what? I'm doing just that till this very day! Anyone with similar experiences?

There was another moment when I remember having to actually search for coffee to go with my crackers. Of course, coffee during childhood was never encouraged and my lovely mum would only allow Milo and milk then. But the taste will never be the same. Hence, I had to search high and low for the perfect match. White coffee or Nescafe wasn't of choice. Only the black, dark, semi-sweet roasted coffee would make the list.

These were the bits and parcels that made my childhood lively and memorable, thanks to Jacob's! As I typed, the rain is still pouring outside then. With these crackers by your side, who would go hungry anyway? Have a great 60 years celebration Jacob's, and you'll be glad to know that I will stick loyal to you in years to come!

**** This article (with the entry of some paragraphs) has won Jacob’s Week 2 60th anniversary giveaway, one of 8 winners with the prize of a set of 5 limited edition tins. The question for week 2 being ‘What is the most unforgettable childhood memory with Jacob’s Cream Crackers?’. Thx to Jacob’s once again for their choice!

Fullhouse ~~ Lifestyle Store and Cafe

Not too long ago, I celebrated another of my friend's 21st birthday. As on every birthday, I was able to open my eyes to a new dining experience, and this time, our destination would be Sunway Pyramid's Fullhouse in KL. On stepping through the arches at the entrance, I was amazed by the concept of this restaurant. Combining a store and a dining cafe within, this place is well decorated with arts, sculptures, paintings, beautifully lighted bulbs and boasting a soothing, grand white-painted theme. Nevertheless it really is a sight for sore eyes, and certainly a place for a romantic dinner, so do make plans peeps!

Store within the cafe.

The menu is literally a magazine concept. The way it presents its dishes brings out a whole new idea to the advertising market. Certainly the menu is a catch, and apart from the big giant menus in 'Chicago Pork Ribs Restaurant', this also scores a double thumbs up in my personal view.

Magazine or menu??

Creative and eye-catching!

And yes, them foods! Certainly here at Fullhouse, I would highly recommend the Dory Fish dish. Soft, tender, and cooked to perfection, this is really a treat for them taste buds! Topped with fresh bean sprouts, mashed potatoes and vegetables in between, plus being the fact submerged in a pool of specially made sauce, this is a must-try on the menu itself. Unlike many other restaurants, Fullhouse utilizes the wonders of taste, sight and smell to bring out the best in this dish, hence make sure you don't miss it should you pay a visit to this place.

Must try Dory Fish!

Next on my must-try list would be the mixed seafood dish. With salmon as the main star, squid rings, mussels and mashed potatoes, topped with yet again specially made sweet sour mango sauce, this is also a must try for seafood lovers. The salmon too is cook to perfection, and unlike many other, the salmon isn't too dry nor too slimy in texture, just nice in between.

Mixed seafood!

Apart from fish, the breaded chicken cutlet is also a star in the menu. But as recommended in the menu itself, the chef's choice would be the mushroom sauced Wok-Sear chicken chop. Though there's a little dissatisfaction on the portion of the chicken provided,  the taste however doesn't tend to disappoint, making it up for that slight imperfection.

Breaded Chicken Cutlet

Chef's choice Wok-Sear Chicken Chop

Still, my favourite choice out of the chicken meat dishes would still be the Chicken Tenderloin. Topped with special made hot sauce, the meat is tender, soft and surprisingly aromatic on each bite. Certainly it does poses a challenge to Kenny Rodgers Roasted Chicken, having matched both in taste and texture, another must-go-for on the menu!

Yummy Chicken Tenderloin!

Other dishes would be the spaghetti dishes as shown below, but if you're looking for something filling and appetizing in proportion, try to go for the dishes as mentioned above. There are also side dishes and the drinks here are also worth a try. Do try the passion fruit green tea if you have the chance, that would be my personal favourite amongst the rest.

Olio Spaghetti

Hot lemon grass

Great food, great drinks!

Nevertheless, this is a restaurant worth visiting on special occasions and stuff. The place is really beautifully decorated and it looks really grand from the outside. Well, pictures will do the talking anyway, and I shall leave that task to them. I also heard that Fullhouse do organize live music and arts performances, and it would really then blend well with a nice meal, simply great food, great drinks, and great environment!

Wonderful paintings

The main character of Fullhouse

Wonderful decorations

Old white grandpa clock!!

Very comfy environment!

Beautiful classy lights

Also, I would like to wish my friend Leong Mei Yee a happy 21st birthday as well. Wishing you to be blessed with luck, joy and health throughout this wonderful year. Stay happy and bright always!!! XD

Birthday girl!

Certified and well-known!

Love and Warmth, Tasted Like Never Before...

Memories; they do bring back a lot to savour, especially those that meant more than just words to you. To put something of such high magnitude into mere sentences, well, each word then holds the key to a wonderful experience. Good or bad they may be, they'll still be the ones you look back to and talk about in years to come. No one has come this far in their life without having to face any turning points in life, nor will they even get that far without any experiences being added to this ever-changing life.

Personally, I prefer to linger on those good memories. They push mii through each day, and with that comes faith and total perseverance in whichever matter I choose to get my hands on. That and all that starts from a place called HOME, a place where I could always go back to no matter what happens, a place where my mind is calm and at peace. And the person keeping that place intact shall be no other than my mother. To mii, she was the one keeping everything in place, she cares for mii and my other 4 siblings. Being in a Chinese family of 7 household members, this really is a big family, not to mention the even bigger task for her to overhaul. Hence, everyday was a challenge for her, a challenge she must make do with to give us a stand, an identity in society.

Those times when I started to look back into my past, I saw that I was less appreciating on the sacrifices she has put up for us. As a teenager, it was a time period where egoism takes over those naive minds. I love her as a mother, but I could never learn to understand all that she has done for mii. Things were taken for granted. Every mother's day at that time, I always thought by giving her the best presents, or setting up the best celebration was all to it for this special day. I still didn't know the true meaning of mother's day and I was really in the path of perceiving things the wrong way. Things needed to change, and hence the turning point did come..

Back in those days, transportation was always a problem for us. Both my parents, being humble teachers needed their own transport to work. Even my dad rode an old, smoking motorbike to work. Times back then were hard for my parents, and my mum too has to take up the task of sending my siblings to school and then herself to work. Mii being the eldest had to be held responsible in helping to ease up my mum's tension, and hence, I sent myself to school. I was only 13 at that time, so naive, so playful.

The school bus was the main transport, and due to my class in the afternoon session, I had to wait for it every hot afternoon for the bus. My shirt drenched wet down to them trousers everytime I reached my class. There were times I even had to change again at school as the weather was all too hot. I was quite chubby that time, so sweating has always been my symptom when it comes to days like these. I could still remember those days when I even prayed for the sky to turn cloudy and rain to start pouring. Things were just as it is back then, and luckily I never learnt to complain.

But what mattered most was when the school bell rang for the last time of the day. It was then I had to walk back from school, rain or shine. My dad was then still busy with his work, my mum with her household chores and she couldn't just leave my siblings at home just to get mii right? They were just too young and febrile. So, perseverance was the only way back for mii, the momentum that kept mii going and going. If I was lucky, I managed to catch a city bus back, if not it was about a 9km walk for mii. I still remembered how much I envy those of my friends who had their parents come in cars to get them, how I envied them getting to and from school without having to be soaked wet, how I envied them looking out of a car window with so little worries on their mind.

For mii, it was a time to worry on how I get home unscathed, how do I get home without being sick if it rains, how will I even make it home if it pours heavily, or how do I get home before the night comes to pay a visit. It was then I started to feel annoyed, annoyed at the fact that my parents couldn't come to get mii from school. I was a handful that time, unable to understand my mum's predicament, and I even had a few quarrels with her. There was a point that I even thought my mum didn't love mii, and that shows how rebellious I was back then.

One day, it started to rain so heavily and that day itself, I had to get home as soon as possible to finish up all my school work. So I ran through the rain and I was soaked head to toe when I finally got home. My books were all soaked wet as well, and you could never find a dry place on mii. My mum saw the state I was in and asked mii to get a warm shower immediately. When I got out of the bathroom, I saw my mum setting down each and every of my books under the fan to make them dry. And then, she went to the kitchen, made a cup of hot Nestle Milo, hugged mii and told mii that she loved mii with all her heart, no matter what happens, forever. I could see tears lingering at the corner of her eyes, and that's when I knew, I had a mother who loved mii ever since the day I was brought to this world.

Sipping up that warm hot Milo, I was touched, certainly happy that I've got such a mother who cares so much for mii. It was more than cars, it was more than money, it was the bond between mii and my mum that set everything in place to a bright future for mii. My love towards my mum grew stronger by a lot that very day.

The same routine played through again for another year, and soon when my family was able to buy themselves another car, only then did I stop taking walks back from school. I still do sometimes walk back from school, because to mii, from those walks, I learnt to understand my mum's care and love for each and every one of us siblings. Years have passed by now, and with her blessing, I am currently finishing my 2nd year in college as a medical student. My love towards my mum never changed, in fact it grew stronger and stronger each day. I am really really grateful to have such a mother, and for that memory, that specific moment, that was a moment, a turning point in my life, locked up in my memory forever....

I love you mum, you are and always will be the best in my heart.... ^-^

This story is dedicated to my loving mother, Yong Pek Hoon for all her dedication, love and care in bringing us 5 siblings up. We all love you mum and Happy Mother's Day! Sorry for all the wrong doings and misunderstandings, we know you meant us the best....

This story was also selected by Nestle Malaysia as the Best Story Written and also the Winner Of The Month, February 2012 in occasion of Nestle 100 Years Celebration Competition. The story was won based on the synopsis of:

Love and warmth, tasted like never before...
Back in those days, travelling back from school has never failed to trouble me. I had to walk back from school, rain or shine. My mum was busy with her work then, so perseverance was the only momentum for me. One day, it started to rain so heavily, and I came back soaked from head to toe. My mum too returned, and saw the state I was in. With tears in her eyes, she made a cup of Milo, hugged me and told me she loved me forever. That's a moment in my life, locked up in my memory forever!

That Old Guitar

That old guitar,
Leaning against cracked walls,
With dust and dirt covered all over.

That old guitar,
It's strings out of tune,
With paint peeling off it's wooden body.

That old guitar,
Playing it's very last song,
With scratches and scars embedded on it's wooden chest.

That old guitar,
There it stands alone; it has lost it's players,
With each second passing by every now and then.

That old guitar,
It stares blank at it's fate; it's destiny,
With memories lingering about it's worn-out strings.

That old guitar,
It has finally reached it's end,
With the falling leaves, it's light fades out; on it went...

This poem of an old guitar symbolizes the life of an old folk, being left alone and unwanted when he reaches the last stages of its life. The guitar, which used to bring out sweet melodies, bringing joy to everyone; it has now being left alone to face it's final days.

This poem not only does it show the life of a man, strong and youthful at first, then finally has to put up with its fate and destiny, this poem also implies how selfish and self-caring our society is. That said, this poem is to address on how we treat people who had raised us up since small, and now it is time to care and treat them like the way they did. Love and affection is needed, the old guitar then, shall it rest in peace....
